When Can I Apply For a Medicare Supplement Plan?

You can apply within the six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This will be the best time to gain your Medicare benefits. In addition, during this enrollment period, pricing and plan options from a Medicare insurance company are better. This period can't be changed or repeated. This period is six months long and starts the month that you have Medicare Part B coverage and are 65 or older. If you are under 65, you may not be able to enroll. However, if you have a disability or syndrome, you may qualify for Medicare under the age of 65, depending on the state, because several states must sell Medigap policies. These plans generally cost more.

Outside the Medigap Open Enrollment Period

Once your Medigap Open Enrollment Period ends, your application is reviewed by a medical underwriting team assigned to evaluate risk. Private insurance companies can approve policies at higher rates or deny coverage altogether.

This is not applicable if you have guaranteed issue rights, which can be applied in situations such as a retiree losing coverage or having a plan that no more extends services in your area. These unique situations are called Special Enrollment Periods.

FAQ:

When Can I Change Medigap Plans?

Changing Medigap plans can be done any time of the year. If you apply outside of your initial enrollment period, you can be denied or have your rates increased due to medical issues. However, with Medigap plans, you can try out a plan and change it any time you want.

Can I Be Denied Medigap Coverage?

No. In Connecticut, you cannot be denied coverage for a Medicare Supplement insurance policy unless you are outside an enrollment period. Even then, the insurer may accept you at a higher premium.
